Top 5 Coffee Houses in Portland

A few months ago, I did a blog post truly from the heart: The Top 5 Coffee Houses in San Diego! Clearly, it spoke to a lot of other people too, because it ended up being one of my top posts I’ve done. Soon, I will be travelling back to one of my favorite cities: Portland, Oregon. If you’ve ever been to Portland, I’m sure you understand why it’s a city that is increasingly becoming more of a hot topic. It’s gorgeous greenery as far as the eye can see, amazing artisan restaurants, amazing independent shops, a city that is bustling with entertainment and nature yet isn’t too overly crowded like other “happening” cities. The perfect weather (not too hot, not too cold, hardly ever snow shoveling). Another great aspect of Portland is the pride they have in their coffee. There are so many independent coffee shops – so many wonderful opportunities to spend a day getting cozy while sipping coffee, in every part of Portland. On my next trip there, I definitely want to try more coffee shops, which has brought me to this list: The Top 5 Coffee Houses in Portland, OR (according to Jessica).
5. Barista
Locations: Pearl, Alberta, Downtown, and Nob Hill. The one I specifically love is in the Pearl, at:
539 NW 13th Ave, Portland, OR 97209
Barista in Portland is consistantly considered one of the best PDX coffee houses across many sites and reviewers! Not only are their roasts superb, but their baristas are true artisans and take their craft seriously. Barista is one of my top choices to visit when you are in the mood to people watch or chat with friends. It is in a beautiful brick industrial building, on a street with lots of foot traffic, making for great coffee sipping and people watching. The indoors is much smaller, but is very minimalist yet cozy. This is also a great coffee shop to visit if you’re wanting to easily walk around and shop before or after your coffee break. 4. ToV Coffee & Tea
Location: 3207 SE Hawthorne Blvd, 3207 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214
What’s not to LoVe about ToV? If you want unique coffee, this is the place to find it. They make Egyptian and Turkish coffees, teas, and espresso drinks, something you don’t find all too often. Their pastries are equally as enticing, and compliment their coffees perfectly. One of the most important aspects of a great coffee house is the atmosphere, and ToV definitely is one of the tops for atmosphere. This coffee place is inside a double decker bus! The bottom of the bus is the lobby where you order, and on top is the seating area, that looks like a bohemian living room! They also serve their teas in Turkish-style silver pots that are super Instagram-worthy! To learn more about ToV Coffee & Tea, you can visit their site here.
3. Sterling Coffee Roasters
Location: 417 NW 21st Ave, Portland, OR 97209
If you want a very hipster Portland experience, go to Sterling! You will instantly feel like you’ve gone back in time to the 1920’s. The baristas are dressed quite dapper, and the whole look of the shop feels like a piano bar or speakeasy. Like most Portland establishments, the baristas take a lot of pride in the drinks they craft. Another favorite thing about Sterling is that it looks like a dapper, old-fashioned bar behind the counter (but this bar serves espresso concoctions). This is a great place to feel cozy on a dreary day! To learn more about Sterling Coffee Roasters, visit their site here.
2. Sisters Coffee Company
Location: There is one in the Pearl, and one on Hood Ave. My favorite is the one at:
273 W Hood Ave, Sisters, OR 97759
When it comes to atmosphere, Sisters Coffee Company on Hood Ave takes the cake. It is definitely the place to go if you want to escape for a bit, since it looks like a log cabin retreat on the inside. With cozy fireplaces, high wood-beam ceilings, and comfy couches, you feel instantly relaxed once you sit down with your coffee cup in hand. 1. Case Study Coffee
Locations: Sandy, Downtown, Alberta. The one I particularly love is in Alberta at:
1422 NE Alberta St, Portland, OR 97211
Case Study Coffee has some of my favorite coldbrew concoctions that I’ve ever had! I had a vanilla bourbon coldbrew once, and it tasted so smooth, and flavored yet not overly sweet. The atmosphere is very modern and industrial looking, with their seating being upstairs. The atmosphere is nice, but the quality and flavors of their brews is what has Case Study Coffee at the top of my list! I also love the location, right amongst the quaint yet bustling Alberta arts district. When you stop by, be sure to grab one of their delicious artisinal pastries (I’m quite a fan of their cinnamon apple “pop tart”. You forgot Silk coffee in Gresham
I’ve never heard of it! Will definitely have to check it out!
