The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot Book Review
Disclosure: I received a copy of The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot complimentary for review and for the purposes of developing recipes inspired by the novel.
One of my favorite things to do is create recipes based on great stories, specifically making recipes on the healthier side! While many of my recipes are inspired by some of my favorite movies, this recipe project was unlike any I had ever done, since it was inspired by a book: The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot by Josh Gottsegen, which releases on June 23 on Amazon and Apple Books.
The novel is about a young chipmunk named Rockford T. Honeypot, who has always felt different from his siblings and has a craving for adventure. Unintentionally destroying his family’s hazelnut business, he is abandoned by his family and left on his own, where he will, for the first time, get to embark on real life adventures, rather than just reading about them in books. The rest of the book follows Rockford’s journey growing up on his own, adulthood, through career successes and failures, falling in love and other adventures throughout his lifetime.
What I loved about the book is that the whole family can enjoy it together! I read it to my five year old daughter, and we were both thoroughly intrigued and invested, following along the fantastical adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot. I feel now more than ever, with the majority of family time being at home, finding a good book to read and enjoy as a family makes for amazing quality time and lasting memories.
We were both pulled into Rockford’s world and loved following his coming-of-age story, which felt like a great balance of a relatable story with lots of depth but with a lot of elements of fantasy. It feels like an instant classic and one I know my daughter will want to read continuously!
Recipes Inspired by the Book
I was super excited to get the honor of creating five recipes inspired by the The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot. As I was reading the book, I had a wonderful time picking out details from Rockford’s story, jotting down notes at any mention of food or a passage that struck me for inspiration:
A favorite nut across the forest in throughout the book is the hazelnut! Rise and shine with these low sugar hazelnut pancakes, topped with a “whipped cream” made from Greek yogurt and nut butter.
For a quick-and-easy afternoon treat inspired by the forest with an assortment of berries, you can find the tutorial for these berry pinwheel kabobs that kids will love! (They were taste test approved by my daughter, and she now requests them regularly). You can use sunflower butter for a nut-free option, or any nut butter of your choice!
A delicious vegan lemon sorbet recipe for summer, inspired by a favorite treat of the character Jewel in Rockford T. Honeypot. A refreshing and tart summertime treat with only four ingredients.
For another Rockford T. Honeypot-inspired dessert, bake delicious individual-sized apple pies, complete with acorn pie crust cut-out.
The titular character Rockford T. Honeypot invents a roasted nut mix called The Nutty Nut. I of course had to create the real life version of this roasted nut mix, which has a slight cinnamon honey taste. They were absolutely delicious, and a perfect snack:
Reading this book to my daughter and then creating these inspired recipes to try with her was such a perfect activity to do while spending so much time at home!
