DIY Pet On-the-Go Kit
I am a proud pet owner of a rescue English Cocker Spaniel named Pigeon! I chose to adopt Pigeon from a photo on a rescue site six years ago, knowing she was the perfect companion for me and my family. She is a wonderful friend to me, and great playing with my toddler! She is everything you could hope for in a dog, so we are always taking her along with us to have fun with the rest of the family. That’s why I want to make sure I take excellent care of her by always having everything on hand that she needs to be comfortable and happy, with a healthy dog food diet at home and on-the-go.
In order to give her a great and nutritious diet, that was also natural, I wanted to choose a dog food for her that didn’t have corn or wheat, and nothing artificial. I went to my local Ralph’s grocery store to look for a dog food that I felt good about, that met my criteria, and was affordable. I ended up finding a 4 lb bag of Nature’s Recipe® Grain-free salmon. One of the first things I noticed about this food when looking at the ingredients list was that the first ingredient was a high quality protein: Salmon! The first ingredient is always one of the most important aspects of a dog food, in my opinion, so I loved seeing salmon as the first ingredient.
Once I found a dog food I was comfortable with, I took it home to give my dog for her dinner, and was pleased to see she liked it and took to it right away! I was thrilled to not only find I loved the ingredient list of Nature’s Recipe, but that my dog seemed to love to eat the food. Now I had to figure out how I could make sure Pigeon was always able to eat this healthy diet at home and out and about!
I decided to make a pet on-the-go kit to keep in the trunk of my car, so that I could stay organized and prepared. I purchased a 3-drawer container to start my kit. On the bottom shelf, I put a few toys of each kind: Tennis balls, in case we were at a park or field and had the opportunity to play fetch. A rope, in case Pigeon desired something to chew on, and a squeaky toy, for a variety of textures.
In the middle drawer, I rolled up a soft blanket. That way, if it’s a hot day I have something to lay on the sidewalk so that it’s not too hot underneath my pup. I also packed a water bottle so that I have some on hand if I am not near a fountain.
In the top drawer, I placed two small stainless steel saucers (perfect for on-the-go, as they don’t get discolored or break), and several plastic bags filled with a serving of Pigeon’s Nature’s Recipe grain-free salmon food. With my new pet on-the-go kit, it has been a breeze to help Pigeon feel her best, no matter where we end up; a restaurant, a park, the beach, you name it!
