A Review of Muppet Babies: Time to Play!
Disclosure: I received a review copy of the DVD complimentary but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
New on DVD, Muppet Babies: Time to Play!
is a perfect showcase of six episodes from the great new animated series’ first season! Reviving an old property and rebuilding it for a brand new generation has been a successful gameplay for Disney, and Muppet Babies
has proven to be no exception. Based on the original series that aired 1984-1991, the show features our favorite Muppet entertainers, downsized to their own childhoods as they play and learn lessons under the watch of Miss Nanny (voiced by Jenny Slate). But since these youngsters aren’t your average pint-sized pals, they play with a heaping amount of imagination, throwing themselves into wild and epic fantasies, from knights in shining armor to rock stars to private eyes.
Featuring the core lineup of Muppets (Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and Animal), the show also make room for a newcomer, Summer Penguin, who makes such an impression, she’s even become my daughter’s favorite Muppet. Other muppets make cameos in a few episodes, so expect to see Rizzo the Rat, Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker, and of course, the two old men from next door, Statler and Waldorf.
The series is fun, bright, and entertaining for all ages, with great, poppy original songs with nice messages for the little ones. The show teaches the ever-growing importance of imagination and play, while also offering lessons on friendship, honesty, facing fears, and dealing with strong emotions, which all happen to be universal lessons that you can never really stop learning.
