Disclosure: This visit to El Capitan Theatre was hosted, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Seeing Mary Poppins Returns at El Capitan Theatre is Pure Magic!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Seeing Disney movies on opening night at El Capitan Theatre is the best experience any Disney fan can ask for! I recently saw Ralph Breaks the Internet at El Capitan Theatre in the Hollywood, and had a terrific experience. When you go to El Capitan, you are definitely among Disney fans since it’s a historical Hollywood theatre that is run by Disney and only plays Disney films. It’s the go-to for us Southern California Disney fans to get together to enjoy a newly released Disney movie for the first time in an environment that celebrates our fandom. Mary Poppins Returns felt particularly special since Mary Poppins is one of the most treasured Disney films. Seeing its sequel is a moment we have all been waiting for for decades!
Not only does it feel special since it is in a gorgeous setting on Hollywood & Highland, but it always has fun displays in its basements. For Mary Poppins Returns, they had some of the film’s best costumes on displays along with props from the film (including the kite). Upstairs you can enjoy photo ops along the walls, where they transformed the lobby to look like Cherry Tree Lane. The pièces de résistance is the photo op (or boomerang off if you rather) where you can light a lamp just like a leary (aka a lamplighter). At the concession stand, you can find souvenir reusable Mary Poppins tumblers as well as 20 oz popcorn tubs with Mary Poppins on them.
When you enter the stunning 1926 theatre, you can enjoy the organ player playing Disney songs on stage, which was decorated with cherry blossoms for Mary Poppins. Then before the film plays, you can enjoy the dazzling pre-show featuring Mary Poppins’ silhouette flying over London. While seeing a movie at El Capitan Theatre is special any day, it feels extra magical on opening night. Not only because you get swag (we got a poster, a Mary Poppins pin, and the umbrella popcorn bucket), but it was also amazing to experience seeing the long anticipated Mary Poppins sequel with so many Disney fans experiencing it for the first time! It will be an experience I will always treasure, and a wonderful family memory. I can’t wait for the next opening fan night event to make new memories with my family! Mary Poppins Returns plays at El Capitan Theatre until January 13th. You can find tickets here.
