Mini Makeover Inspiration

I live in a two-story townhouse, and like most two-story homes, I have a downstairs half bath. I love the convenience of my little half bath, but I feel like it isn’t as cute or decorated how I would like, compared to my other rooms. With a space so small, and our home being a rental (meaning I can’t re-paint or drill holes), not to mention on a tight budget, I felt like there wasn’t much I could do to transform my half bathroom.

Recently, inspiration struck on how I could make my bathroom pretty, neat, and re-done in a way that fit my budget and requirements. Where did inspiration strike? At a recent trip to Rite Aid. At Rite Aid, while shopping for some basics, I came across Scott Tube-Free toilet paper. Scott Tube Free toilet paper is toilet paper…without the tube! I had never seen or heard anything like that, and was intrigued to find out why it was tubeless, and what the benefit was of tubeless toilet paper. The reason Scott made a tubeless roll is to decrease environmental waste! That’s when inspiration struck: to do an eco-friendly mini makeover on my bathroom!

For my half bathroom eco-friendly mini makeover, I had to think of what things I had to change:

  • I had to make sure my soap was eco-friendly.
  • I had to make sure my bathroom cleaner was eco-friendly.
  • I wanted to make sure my bathroom was decorated with a beautiful, yet clean and minimalist look.
  • I wanted to use the Scott Tube Free toilet paper rolls to help minimize my environmental impact.

Step 1. Eco-Friendly Soap

For an eco-friendly soap, you can either buy a gentle soap or make a soap at home. If buying a soap, I recommend an unscented castile bar soap, which is made from vegetable oil (that’s what I did). If wanting to make your own liquid soap, simply:

  1. Using a grater, shave about 1/4 bar of castile soap.
  2. Mix the grated soap with 4 cups of water on the stove until melted.
  3. You can add about 20 drops of essential oils if you would like it scented.

Step 2. Eco-Friendly Bathroom Cleaner

Your bathroom cleaner is easy to make, and similar to the steps above:

  1. Using a grater, shave about 1/4 bar of castile soap.
  2. Pour two cups of warm water into an empty spray bottle.
  3. Then add in 1 Tablespoon of baking soda and your grated castile soap to the bottle.
  4. You can add essential oils if you want this to be scented.
  5. Shake up the bottle and use.

I like to keep my bottle of cleaner in the bathroom (pictured above) so I can frequently do touch-ups, to keep my bathroom sparkling!

Step 3. Decor

Since I have a minimalist style, and my bathroom is small, I wanted just a couple small touches in my bathroom mini makeover. I added a picture above the toilet to add a pop of color on the plain white walls. And then the perfect touch to an eco-friendly bathroom mini makeover was a plant! I put it right below the picture, again to make my walls not look so plain and white; I really wanted pops of color without cluttering up my half bathroom space.

For a plant, I needed to choose one that grew well indoors and without a lot of sunlight. I went with a cast iron plant, since it fit the criteria I was looking for. If you go to any local hardware store’s gardening section, they typically have labels on which plants do well indoors and in low light.

Step 4. Toilet Paper

It may seem like the decor would be the most important part of my mini bathroom makeover. However, in making sure I could be as green as possible in my bathroom makeover, I thought about what product gets used up the most: Toilet paper! Toilet paper, a paper product, of course is a necessity for every bathroom, it can’t be eliminated! But the toilet paper ROLL can! At Rite Aid I found the 4-count package of 400-sheet Scott Tube-Free toilet paper as the perfect fit for my eco-friendly bathroom mini makeover.

With an average of 17 billion toilet paper rolls used each year in the world, cutting out the unnecessary tube could save a lot of our earth’s resources. It was surprising to me it wasn’t thought of sooner! What I especially loved about the toilet paper was that it was very affordable (it was $3.99 on sale at Rite Aid, normally $4.99), and still was thick, soft toilet paper. Another bonus, besides being more eco-friendly, is that now my bathroom trashcan doesn’t fill up as quickly with empty toilet paper rolls.
